PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA – Fans of R&B were left disappointed this week after American singer Tank unexpectedly cancelled his much-anticipated performance in South Africa. The singer was scheduled to headline the grand opening of Ndlala Mall in Arcadia, Pretoria, on 2 and 3 August. The announcement sent shockwaves through his South African fanbase, many of whom had already made travel and accommodation plans to attend the event.

The Ndlala Mall launch, a highly publicised event spearheaded by media personality Lerato Kganyago and her husband, businessman Thami Ndlala, was expected to be a major celebration. The couple had recently made headlines for purchasing an entire shopping mall and had planned a star-studded opening, with American singer Tank as the main attraction.

Tank, whose real name is Durrell Artaze Babbs, confirmed the cancellation through a heartfelt video posted on his official Instagram page. While he did not go into specific details, the 49-year-old artist cited unresolved business issues as the reason for pulling out of the performance.

American Singer Tank Expresses Regret Over Cancelled South Africa Performance

In his video message, American singer Tank addressed his South African fans directly, offering a sincere apology for the last-minute cancellation. “Some things have fallen apart business-wise that are going to prevent me from fulfilling my obligations to you,” he said. “I firstly wan people who were making plans to pull up and enjoy this R&B music. Hopefully, things can be resolved, and preferably, I can get up there.”

The singer’s tone was one of visible disappointment, and he made it clear that he had every intention of performing in South Africa, a country he has long expressed admiration for. His fans, while disheartened, have largely responded with understanding, flooding the comments section of his post with messages of support and hopes for a rescheduled tour date.

The performance was part of a larger celebration planned by Lerato Kganyago and Thami Ndlala to mark the grand opening of their latest business venture, Ndlala Mall. The couple is known not only for their lavish lifestyle but also for their high-profile events and investments across South Africa.

By inviting American singer Tank to headline the launch, the Ndlalas aimed to combine commerce and culture, elevating the mall opening to a celebrity-level experience. The cancellation, however, puts a damper on those plans and has sparked questions about what went wrong behind the scenes.

So far, neither Lerato Kganyago nor Thami Ndlala has released an official statement regarding Tank’s withdrawal. Sources close to the event suggest that contractual disagreements or logistical complications may have led to the breakdown, though this remains unconfirmed.

South African fans of American singer Tank have taken to social media to express their disappointment and confusion over the abrupt change. Many were excited to see the “Maybe I Deserve” hitmaker live, especially since this would have marked one of his few performances on the African continent.

“It’s heartbreaking,” one fan tweeted. “I’ve loved Tank’s music since the early 2000s. I already booked my tickets and hotel for this weekend.”

Others echoed the sentiment but thanked the singer for his transparency. “At least he communicated. Most artists would just go silent. We hope he finds a way to make it up to his fans here,” another user posted on Instagram.

Despite the setback, American singer Tank did not rule out the possibility of performing in South Africa at a later date. In his video, he left the door open for future engagements, saying, “Hopefully, things can be resolved, and preferably, I can get up there.”

Industry insiders believe that the demand for an R&B concert featuring Tank remains strong and that promoters may soon revisit the idea of bringing him to South Africa for a dedicated tour.

Meanwhile, fans are left with speculation and hope, waiting to see whether the singer’s next visit to the continent will finally happen under better circumstances.

Tank ended his video message with a personal note to his supporters. “You’ve been nothing but amazing to me, and I owe you this show. I really do. Just know I’m working to make things right.”

As of now, no new date has been announced, but the cancellation has only solidified the love and appreciation South African fans have for American singer Tank. If and when he returns, he is likely to receive an even warmer welcome.
