Nollywood actress and filmmaker Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has received two social impact honours in the United States following her decision to channel proceeds from her film Mother’s Love towards children’s education.
The actress announced on Sunday that she had received a Social Impact Award and a Lifetime Social Impact Recognition from Israel Tribune and 90210 Enterprise.
Expressing gratitude for the honours, Omotola said she was thankful for the opportunity to combine filmmaking with giving back to society.
She recalled her decision to donate the entire amount that accrued to the producers of Mother’s Love to Slum2School Africa, an organisation supporting children from underserved communities.
Donation From ‘Mother’s Love’
Mother’s Love, which marked Omotola’s feature directorial debut, grossed more than N103 million during its cinema run. After deductions for exhibitors, distributors, taxes and other expenses, N22,276,558 accrued to the producers.
Omotola subsequently confirmed that the entire amount was transferred to Slum2School Africa in July to support its education initiatives.
The donation was linked to the film’s focus on children from underserved communities, including Makoko, which featured in the project.
The latest honours add to Omotola’s longstanding involvement in social causes alongside her career in Nollywood.
The actress has also spoken publicly about the need for greater structure within Nigeria’s film industry and has compared aspects of her experience in Nollywood with her work in Hollywood.
